This dynamo of canine energy is our dog. She is called , “Apple” in homage to my home state of Washington. She is getting up there in years now; somewhere between 14 and 15. Her hearing is questionable. Her eyesight in doubt. She mostly sleeps except for when she is patrolling the back 40 for prowlers and /or squirrels. She adores her treats which are divvied out, one in the morning and one in the evening. (the morning treat is a cosequin for her joint health but she’s happy to have it.) Apple turned up on our porch shortly after we moved to Colorado Springs 13 ½ years ago. We already had 2 elderly dogs at the time so definitely were not in the market for another dog. Off to the humane society she went, we, assuming that someone would come to reclaim their dear doggie. But as we followed online, nobody turned up to claim her. Soooo , back to the humane society to pick up what we now figured was our dog. Of course, she now had a case of kennel cough. We were now a 3-dog family which was 2 too many. As the years have ticked by, Apple has survived a broken leg and a scary roll over car crash in the middle of nowhere, Idaho. She has enjoyed long car trips in the backseat of our trusty Subaru. She has adored countless hikes into the hills with her favorite canine friends, Mochi and Enkidu. She keeps our garden safe from interlopers. She really is a true-blue friend, companion and a noble beast. Our lives are enriched by her comfortable presence.
